The meta tags that still matter
- TitleThe blue line of the result and the browser tab. Keep it under ~60 characters, the words that matter first, the brand last.
- Meta descriptionOften used as the snippet under the title. 120–160 characters that say what the reader gets; Google may rewrite a vague one.
- CanonicalTells search engines which URL is the real one, so copies with tracking parameters, http or www don't compete with it.
- Robotsnoindex keeps a page out of results — useful for drafts and thank-you pages, a disaster on a landing page. It can also come as an X-Robots-Tag header.
- Viewport and langGoogle ranks the mobile version of a page; without a viewport phones get the zoomed-out desktop layout. lang helps screen readers and translation.
- Structured dataJSON-LD describes the page (article, product, FAQ, breadcrumbs) and can earn rich results. Validate it with Google's Rich Results Test.
Is this meta tags checker free?
Yes, with no sign-up. Check any public page as often as you like (a few dozen checks per 10 minutes).
How long should a title tag be?
Up to about 60 characters: Google cuts titles at roughly 600 pixels on desktop. Put the words that matter first.
How long should a meta description be?
About 120–160 characters. Shorter ones waste the space; longer ones get cut, especially on phones.
Do meta keywords still matter?
No. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for over a decade. It doesn't hurt, but it doesn't help either.
Does it check Open Graph tags too?
It counts them; the OG image checker shows how the link looks when shared on X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp and Slack.
Your share image is a meta tag too
getwowlink makes an og:image for every page of your site, so every link you share gets the click.
